FRAMEWORK FOR HELPING CHILDREN PROTECT THEMSELVES:

THEY NEED TO KNOW:

  • What an assault is so that they can recognize behavior leading up to one
  • That they have the right to control who touches them and how
  • That they can ask us about puzzling or confusing adult behavior
  • That it is not their fault if someone assaults them
  • That Sexual Assault is NEVER the child’s fault!
  • That Sexual Assault is ALWAYS the perpetrator’s fault!

IF ASSAULTED:

  • Reassure the child:
  • You are glad that she/he told you about it
  • You believe what she/he has told you
  • You know it is NOT her/his fault
  • You are sorry about what happened TO them
  • You will do your best to protect and support her/him
